Baking soda probably doesn't need a special introduction - surely you all know it as part of baking powder or as a remedy for heartburn. But did you know that this soda (CAUTION - DO NOT CONFUSE WASHING SODA, these are different substances!) has many uses in ecological household care?
You can use it as a versatile cleaner and odor absorber. The crystalline structure of soda works as a gentle abrasive (without the risk of scratching surfaces), its mild alkalinity helps to dissolve fatty acids contained in kitchen dirt. You can even put out small domestic fires with it.
Baking soda decomposes with heat into sodium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide, so it is extremely considerate of nature and our health. It was first produced in 1791 by the French chemist Nicolas Leblanc for bakeries.
